Leopard gecko — size comparison — facts and sources

The leopard gecko comes from dry South Asian regions, including Pakistan and north-western India. It lives on stony ground, in dry scrub and along desert margins. Pale colouring with dark spots creates its distinctive appearance; young more often have crossbands. A thick tail is clearly set apart from the body.

By day it hides beneath stones and in burrows. It chiefly emerges after dark when the ground is cooler. It catches insects and other invertebrates using vision and short close-range strikes. Fat stored in the tail helps it endure gaps in food availability.

Unlike many tree-dwelling geckos, it has movable eyelids and toes without adhesive pads. It mainly moves on the ground rather than smooth vertical surfaces. A female lays eggs in shelter. Activity times and hiding-place selection remain closely tied to dry-environment temperatures.
