Leatherback sea turtle — size comparison — facts and sources
The leatherback is a large ocean-going turtle found in many parts of the world. Unlike other living sea turtles, it has a skin-covered shell with prominent lengthwise ridges. Powerful front flippers and a streamlined body suit long migrations across the open ocean.
It mainly feeds on jellyfish and other soft-bodied invertebrates. It can dive deeply but must return regularly to the surface because it breathes through lungs. Maintaining a body temperature above the surrounding water allows it to visit cooler regions than many other sea turtles.
Females lay eggs on tropical beaches. Hatchlings immediately head towards water and receive no parental care.
