Least weasel — size comparison — facts and sources

The least weasel travels through dense vegetation and narrow passages used by small rodents. It uses fields, meadows and forests where suitable prey and retreats occur. Its slender body reaches places inaccessible to larger predators.

It hunts mainly small mammals. High energy needs require regular feeding, so activity consists of shorter hunting and resting periods. Smell and hearing matter in prey searching. It may use abandoned burrows as shelters.

The female rears offspring alone. Rodent availability affects breeding opportunities and juvenile survival. In northern populations the fur may turn white in winter. The tail lacks the stoat's characteristic black tip, helping distinguish the species.
