The California kingsnake originates in southwestern North America. Its best-known natural colouring consists of alternating dark and pale bands, although the pattern varies. Smooth, glossy scales and a slender body give it a distinctive appearance; its head is only slightly wider than the neck.
It inhabits highly varied environments, from scrub and rocks to grasslands and forests. It actively searches for prey using scents left nearby. It eats rodents, lizards, birds and other snakes, subduing them with body coils.
Adults rarely exceed around one metre and twenty centimetres in length. The female lays eggs from which independent young hatch. The name kingsnake refers to hunting other snakes, an important part of its ecology.
