The rufous hare-wallaby inhabits dry grasslands and scrub. It has soft grey-reddish fur, large eyes and long, pointed ears. Longer hair over the rear body creates a shaggy appearance. Large hind legs power leaps, while forelimbs assist slower movement and feeding.

By day it uses shallow sheltered places among vegetation. After dark it selects seeds, grasses and other plant parts. Diet composition may respond to food-availability changes associated with rain and dry periods.
