The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The southern viscacha has soft fur, large ears and powerful hind legs. It inhabits rocky Andean slopes. It rests among rocks and leaps skilfully between them; its tail helps it balance on uneven terrain.
It is mainly active by day, often with peaks in the morning and towards evening. Viscachas bask on exposed rocks and groom their fur. Crevice shelters offer escape from predators and cover while resting.
Grasses, mosses and lichens are gathered near rocky retreats. Long whiskers on the muzzle help it navigate tight spaces.
Długość głowy i tułowia: od końca pyska do nasady ogona, bez kończyn i ogona. Przykład 37.5 cm; głowa i tułów (C-C) 30–45 cm. Źródło: Administración de Parques Nacionales, Argentyna.
