Komodo dragon — size comparison — facts and sources

The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard. It inhabits Indonesian islands including Komodo, Rinca and Flores, using dry monsoon forests, savannas and coastal areas. Its heavy body, strong limbs and long tail are those of a large terrestrial predator.

It hunts vertebrates and also eats carrion. Adults can take much larger food than juveniles. Serrated teeth cut tissue, while venom glands contribute to subduing prey. Activity is mainly during the day, alternating with rest and temperature regulation.

Outside the breeding season, it is usually solitary. Females lay eggs in the ground, sometimes using old megapode nests. Young dragons spend more time in trees, where they can avoid large predators, including adult Komodo dragons.

Smithsonian podaje dzikim waranom typowo około 70 kg, a największemu zweryfikowanemu osobnikowi 3,13 m i 166 kg. Ponieważ źródła nie stosują wysokości grzbietu jako standardowego wymiaru, 50 cm na planszy pozostaje jawną kalibracją pokazanej ilustracji.
