The Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi) is a brown-bear subspecies from the Kodiak archipelago off Alaska. Island isolation limited mixing with mainland bears. Its massive body and developed shoulder region are shared with other brown bears.
It uses coasts, rivers, meadows and mountain slopes. Its omnivorous diet changes seasonally, including plants and animal food. Local resources vary between valleys, so individuals do not always choose the same feeding grounds.
Adults usually live alone, although plentiful food can attract many bears to one place. Females care for their offspring and teach them to use their surroundings.
Niedźwiedź kodiacki występuje wyłącznie na archipelagu Kodiak. Obfite zasoby pokarmu, między innymi łososie, pozwalają dorosłym samcom osiągać wyjątkową masę. Alaska Department of Fish and Game podaje, że wielki samiec może przekroczyć pięć stóp wysokości na czterech łapach. Plansza używa ostrożnych 140 cm w barku, wyraźnie poniżej tej granicy.
