Koala — size comparison — facts and sources

The koala is a marsupial of eastern Australia’s eucalyptus forests. It has ash-grey fur, a pale chest and rounded, well-furred ears. Animals in the cooler south are generally larger and more densely coated. Two front digits oppose the others, helping it grip branches together with rough pads.

It selects leaves from particular eucalyptus species and also eats some flowers and stems. Its fibrous food is processed with help from an enlarged caecum. The low energy content of leaves contributes to long periods of sleep and rest.

Adults generally stay apart. Males mark their surroundings with a chest-gland secretion. Young initially develop in the pouch and later ride on the mother’s back. During the transition to leaves, they ingest soft faecal material from her, helping establish the gut bacteria needed to digest the food.
