Kinkajou — size comparison — facts and sources

The kinkajou lives in tropical Central and South American forests. It is active at night and travels mainly in tree crowns. Its prehensile tail helps maintain position while reaching food. By day it rests in sheltered places, including cavities.

Fruit, including figs, forms the basis of its menu. It returns by familiar routes to food trees, often feeding alone. Several individuals may share a site during abundant fruiting. Insects, flowers and nectar supplement its diet seasonally. Swallowed seeds may be carried farther away.

Kinkajous may rest together and groom one another before dispersing at night. Scent marks on branches and calls help maintain contacts. The female is the main carer of young, which gradually learns arboreal routes and food locations.
