Jungle cat — size comparison — facts and sources

The jungle cat inhabits areas from the Nile Valley through the Middle East to southern Asia. It often selects riverbanks, reedbeds and dense scrub. Waterside vegetation provides cover and access to food animals.

It hunts mainly rodents, supplementing its diet with birds, amphibians, fish and other small prey. It approaches under vegetation cover, then makes a rapid leap. Depending on conditions it can also use fields and settlement edges. Food availability influences its feeding-site selection.

It usually travels alone, although partner and family interactions occur during breeding. Scent marks help neighbours recognise occupied areas. The female rears young in shelter. Growing kittens gradually explore their surroundings and practise behaviours needed for hunting.
