The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Javan rusa (Rusa timorensis) is a deer originating from Java, Bali and neighbouring islands. Human transport has established it elsewhere, including Indian Ocean islands. Males have branched antlers, while the brown coat suits dry, overgrown landscapes.
It inhabits dry forests, savannas and grassy woodland margins. Grasses, leaves, young shoots and fruit provide food from different vegetation layers. Forest cover adjoining open pasture allows movement between resting and feeding areas.
Animals may form groups whose membership varies through the year. Males grow antlers annually and compete during breeding. Outside its native range the rusa can strongly affect local vegetation, so its presence on an island does not always make it a natural member of that island's fauna.
