Japanese macaque — size comparison — facts and sources

The Japanese macaque inhabits Japan's forests, including areas with cold winters. It does not hibernate, remaining active despite seasonal resource shortages. Dense fur and social behaviours help it function under changing conditions.

Its food changes through the year. It eats fruit, seeds, leaves, flowers and other available plant parts, as well as some animal food. In winter it must use resources other than abundant summer or autumn fruits.

It lives in groups where females usually remain associated with their birthplace, while males more often change groups. Mutual grooming helps maintain relationships. It can travel both on the ground and in trees.
