The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The jaguar is a large American cat ranging from Mexico to northern Argentina. Its largest continuous areas of distribution are in the Amazon Basin. It inhabits humid forests, wetlands and scrub, usually with access to water.
Solitary and territorial, it mainly hunts by ambush. Prey includes capybaras, peccaries, caimans and turtles. It swims well and crosses rivers, with aquatic prey adding to its forest hunting opportunities.
Jaguar rosettes are usually larger than a leopard’s and often contain dark central spots. Its bite is exceptionally powerful relative to body size. It can break a turtle’s hard shell and often subdues prey by biting through the skull.
