The northern brown bandicoot, Isoodon macrourus, inhabits grasslands, scrub and forests. It has coarse brown fur, a white belly, small ears and a short, almost bare tail. Digging gives access to invertebrates beneath the surface.

It eats soil invertebrates and plant food. It feeds at night and spends the day in a nest concealed among grasses or shrubs. Males and females may differ in build and size despite similar coat patterns.
