The Irrawaddy dolphin has a rounded head and small dorsal fin. It inhabits Southeast Asian coasts, estuaries and isolated freshwater populations. It belongs to the oceanic dolphin family even though some individuals spend their entire lives in rivers or lakes.
Usually swimming calmly in small groups, it surfaces inconspicuously. It catches fish and bottom-dwelling crustaceans, plus cephalopods in marine waters. Populations are separated; particularly small river populations can be threatened by individual net-related deaths.
