Indri — size comparison — facts and sources

The indri inhabits wet forests of northeastern Madagascar. It lives mainly in trees, leaping between vertical trunks and branches. On the ground it hops with its forelimbs raised.

It is active by day and spends much time feeding. It eats tree leaves, fruit and flowers and sometimes also uses vegetation nearer the ground.

It lives in family groups containing an adult pair and offspring. The female is dominant over the male. Distinctive loud songs help maintain contact and announce occupancy to neighbouring groups. Scent information left on plants supplements this communication in the forest.
