The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin inhabits shallow warm waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. It occurs in bays, lagoons and near reefs. It is distinct from the better-known Tursiops truncatus, although both have similar grey bodies and elongated snouts.
It feeds alone or in small groups on fish, cephalopods and crustaceans. Coastal habitats provide bottom-associated and open-water prey. Echolocation assists food searches, including in less clear bay waters.
