The khur is the Indian subspecies of the Asiatic wild ass, associated chiefly with Gujarat's plains. Its modern conservation history includes population recovery around the Little Rann of Kutch. Occurrence beyond fenced refuges means daily movements may connect protected areas with human-used land.
It feeds on grasses, herbs and available shrubs. Food and water searches influence routes, especially in the dry season. Females with young form groups, and social arrangements change with local conditions. The female usually bears one foal that soon follows her.
Infrastructure development may interrupt routes between pastures and water sources. Crop use in turn causes farmer conflicts. The presence of khurs outside refuges means conservation also covers human-used areas.
