The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), or greater one-horned rhinoceros, comes from river plains in north-eastern India and southern Nepal. It inhabits tall grassland, floodplains and adjoining forests. It has one horn and thick, knobbly skin whose deep folds resemble armour plates.
It eats grasses, leaves, twigs, fruit and aquatic plants, using its grasping upper lip. Usually solitary, it readily enters water and uses mud, alternating feeding with rest. Deep folds let the thick skin flex during movement.
