The barking treefrog is a nocturnal amphibian associated with trees and breeding waters in the southeastern United States. It has a stocky body, granular skin and dark spots on green or brown. By day it usually rests high in vegetation. During heat and drought it may shelter among roots and in the ground.
Breeding males gather in water and form choruses, particularly on rainy nights. Females choose mates by voice. Eggs enter the water, where tadpoles develop; parents provide no further care after laying.
