Humphead wrasse — size comparison — facts and sources

The humphead wrasse is a large Indo-Pacific reef fish. Adults have thick lips and may develop a characteristic forehead hump. Colour and appearance change with age and sex.

It feeds by day on molluscs, crustaceans, sea urchins and fish. Powerful pharyngeal teeth crush hard prey coverings. Some individuals change from female to male during life. Slow growth and late maturity mean intensive fishing can particularly strongly alter population structure.
