The humpback whale is recognisable by its very long pectoral fins, knobbly head and pronounced hump before the dorsal fin. Patterns on the underside of the tail flukes identify individuals. It occurs in oceans worldwide, using both offshore and coastal waters.
Many populations migrate long distances between cool feeding grounds and warmer breeding waters. They filter krill and small schooling fish through baleen. In some places, humpbacks cooperate by surrounding fish with bubbles, concentrating prey before rising together with open mouths.
Males produce long, structured songs whose patterns can change over time. A female gives birth to one calf and accompanies it through early life. Breaching and fin-slapping are conspicuous behaviours, but most activity takes place underwater.
