Hooded seal — size comparison — facts and sources

The hooded seal inhabits the North Atlantic and adjoining Arctic waters. Adult males have an expandable area of head skin that inflates into a dark hood. They can also display a red sac protruding from a nostril. Females lack such developed ornaments.

It spends much of the year at sea, hunting fish and squid and also eating crustaceans. It breeds on seasonal sea ice. Males display inflatable structures during encounters with rivals and females, while pups are born on ice floes.
