The honey badger (Mellivora capensis) is a strongly built mustelid of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. It inhabits savannas, dry scrub, semi-deserts and open woodland. A broad pale band extends from forehead to tail base, contrasting with dark underparts.
Its varied diet includes insects, larvae, reptiles, rodents, birds and fruit. A strong neck and large foreclaws help excavate ground and investigate hiding places, obtaining food concealed in soil or vegetation.
It usually lives alone and may be active at night. Thick, loose skin increases freedom of movement in defence, allowing it to twist and reach an opponent even while held.
