Hoffmann's two-toed sloth lives in tropical forest canopies in Central and South America. It performs most activities while gripping branches or hanging beneath them. It is mostly solitary; the female and her young form a clear bond.
It eats mainly leaves, buds and young shoots, as well as flowers and fruit. It digests food slowly with the help of gut microorganisms. An economical metabolism allows use of plant resources without frequent intensive journeys.
Activity occurs mainly at night. Ambient temperature affects its functioning; choosing sunny and shaded places helps regulate body temperature. It rarely descends to the ground, including to repeatedly used defecation sites. Despite the calm pace of normal movement, it can defend itself with claws and teeth when threatened.
