The Himalayan tahr is a mountain mammal related to goats. Hooves with a hard rim and flexible sole help it negotiate steep rocks. During the cold season, males wear a long mane falling over the neck and shoulders; the summer coat is shorter.
These animals feed on grasses, herbs, leaves and shoots, moving between vegetation zones at different elevations. They can rest on inaccessible rock ledges, while herd life helps them watch their surroundings. Females with young may form groups separate from adult males.
