Western hognose snake — size comparison — facts and sources

The western hognose snake inhabits open central North America. Its distinctive upturned snout shifts loose substrate and distinguishes it from many other regional snakes.

It stays chiefly on the ground and in shallow shelters. Toads form an important dietary component, although it also eats other small vertebrates. The female lays eggs in cover.

When threatened it may flatten its front body and hiss. If deterrence fails, it may roll onto its back and play dead.
