Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is a land tortoise of southern Europe, living in dry scrub and open woodland.
Strong limbs allow it to move over the ground; it gathers food with its beak, cropping accessible parts of low vegetation. It feeds by day and seeks cover in heat. It becomes dormant in the cold season, with the pattern varying by region.
It eats grasses, leaves and flowers. The female buries eggs in soil. Western populations are smaller on average than eastern ones.
