The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The lowland streaked tenrec has black-and-yellow stripes and spines, including a pale snout stripe. It inhabits eastern Madagascar’s humid forests. Specialised spines can produce sounds when rubbed together, while others also serve defence against predators.
It eats chiefly earthworms and other invertebrates found in damp ground. A yellow snout stripe helps distinguish it from the highland streaked tenrec, whose pattern is black and white.
In unfavourable conditions it may reduce activity and metabolic rate.
