Hellbender — size comparison — facts and sources
The hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) is an aquatic salamander of eastern United States rivers. It inhabits well-oxygenated streams and rivers with rocky beds. A flattened head and loose skin folds suit life beneath stones in flowing water.
It shelters beneath large, flat stones by day and feeds most often at night.
Skin folds increase the surface available for gas exchange. It eats chiefly crayfish and other aquatic animals. The male occupies a breeding shelter and cares for eggs deposited there.
