Hector's dolphin — size comparison — facts and sources

Hector's dolphin occurs only in New Zealand's coastal waters. Small, with a short snout and rounded dorsal fin, it usually remains in shallow water, bringing feeding grounds close to coastal human activity.

Small groups hunt fish, squid and crustaceans. The species includes two subspecies; Māui dolphin, associated with the North Island's west coast, is particularly threatened. Net entanglement is a serious problem for these small, geographically restricted populations.
