Hector’s beaked whale — size comparison — facts and sources

Hector’s beaked whale lives in cold and temperate Southern Hemisphere waters. Known specimens come from Argentina, New Zealand and southern Africa among other places. Among the smaller beaked whales, it nevertheless reaches several metres as an adult.

The male’s single tooth pair lies near the lower-jaw tip. It is thought to eat fish and cephalopods, but dietary details are poorly known. Rare direct observations impede descriptions of seasonal behavioural changes.
