Hawaiian monk seal — size comparison — facts and sources
The Hawaiian monk seal occurs only in the Hawaiian archipelago. It rests on beaches and feeds on nearby reefs and slopes. A slender head and short coat are characteristic; unlike sea lions it lacks external ear flaps.
Usually feeding alone, it seeks fish, octopuses, squid and crustaceans. Dives involve searching the bottom and crevices concealing prey. It comes ashore to rest, moult and give birth. Its entire natural population depends on one oceanic archipelago.
