Harvest mouse — size comparison — facts and sources

The harvest mouse lives among tall grasses, reeds and crops. It is not confined to the ground: it climbs stems, grasping them with its feet and tail. This allows use of dense vegetation that provides both cover and feeding places.

It eats grass seeds, fruit, grain, insects and larvae. It alternates activity with short rests at various times of day and night. When threatened it may freeze against a stem or descend into denser cover near the ground. In autumn and winter it also uses sheltered places near agricultural stores.

The female weaves a spherical nest from split grass leaves and lines it with soft material. Young are initially blind and dependent on their mother. Outside breeding, harvest mice may tolerate neighbours and form winter aggregations.
