The hartebeest is a herd-living antelope of savannas, open grassland plains and scrub edges. An elongated, narrow head, high shoulders and a back sloping towards the rump distinguish it. Horns arise from a pronounced frontal base, with shape and coat colour varying between populations.
It eats almost entirely grasses. The elongated muzzle helps crop and chew even tough, dry blades. It lives in herds, and mature males may defend permanent territories. Long limbs permit enduring running in open country.
