Harp seal — size comparison — facts and sources

The harp seal inhabits the North Atlantic and adjoining Arctic waters. Adults have a dark harp-shaped dorsal pattern that gives the species its English name. Breeding requires seasonal sea ice.

Females bear pups on ice floes and nurse them briefly with very fatty milk. This rapidly builds energy reserves before independence. Adults hunt fish and crustaceans. Ice formation and disappearance strongly affect pup survival at breeding sites.
