The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is a small cetacean with a stocky body, blunt head lacking a dolphinlike beak and triangular dorsal fin. Dark grey above, it has paler flanks and whitish underparts. It inhabits Northern Hemisphere coastal waters, including the Baltic.
Usually seen alone or in small groups, it hunts fish and cephalopods using echolocation. Accidental net entanglement and underwater noise are major threats.
The critical threat described by WWF concerns the Baltic population rather than automatically applying to the entire species.
