The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The hammer-headed bat is a fruit bat whose male has an enormous, angular head, an enlarged muzzle and hanging lips. Grey-brown fur contrasts with dark wing membranes and paler hairs near the ears and shoulders. Females have a much slimmer, more fox-like muzzle.
It occurs in wet regions of sub-Saharan Africa. It rests in trees by day and searches for ripe fruit at night. It may squeeze juice from fruit and discard some chewed pulp. Large wings allow travel between scattered feeding places.
During courtship males may gather at display grounds and produce loud, honking calls. An enlarged larynx and resonating head structures amplify these signals.
