Hamadryas baboon — size comparison — facts and sources

The hamadryas baboon uses dry landscapes of northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Access to water and safe sleeping places influences daily movement. Rocky terrain provides shelter, although it often obtains food in more open areas.

It is omnivorous. It eats seeds, underground plant parts, fruit, gums and insects. Resources may be scattered, so feeding involves travel between places offering food.

It forms a multilevel social system. Small units centred on a male and females combine into larger groups. Social contacts and access to sleeping sites organise the life of the whole community.
