Guinea pig — size comparison — facts and sources

The guinea pig, also called the domestic cavy, is a rodent domesticated in South America. Its ancestors were associated with the Andes. A compact body, short limbs and no visible tail distinguish it from many other rodents. Domestic varieties may differ in hair length and texture and show varied coat patterns.

It feeds on plants. Its incisors grow continuously and are worn down during eating. It cannot produce its own vitamin C, which it must obtain from food.

Guinea pigs are social and communicate with a rich range of sounds. The young are born furred and with open eyes and soon begin moving alongside their mother.
