The guanaco (Lama guanicoe) is a wild South American camelid closely related to the llama. It inhabits dry steppes, semi-deserts, plateaus and Andean slopes. A slender neck, long legs and dense coat suit open, often cold landscapes. The belly is cream, with a darker muzzle and ears.
It eats grasses, herbs, leaves and lichens. It can use sparse dry-country vegetation, obtaining some water from food.
Guanacos live in herds. Across Patagonia’s open plains, they can spot danger far away and quickly escape a predator.
Guanako jest dzikim krewnym lamy, przystosowanym do suchych stepów, płaskowyżów i chłodnych stoków Andów. Animal Diversity Web podaje dorosłym 90–130 cm w barku oraz 90–140 kg. Plansza używa reprezentatywnych 115 cm; szyja, głowa i długie uszy nie podnoszą skali.
