The grey brocket uses more open and drier environments than many forest brockets. It occurs in scrub, loosely structured forests and Chaco landscapes. Nearby cover remains important for hiding while resting.

It feeds on fruit, seeds and leaves. It may also use tougher, dry plant food whose availability changes seasonally. Its food searching takes it between patches of scrub and more open places.

It is most often seen alone. During the day it may hide in dense vegetation, emerging to feed at dusk or at night.
