Green iguana — size comparison — facts and sources

The green iguana is a large tree-dwelling lizard of tropical Central and South America. It inhabits forests and scrub, often near rivers. A dorsal crest, large dewlap and long, powerful tail distinguish it. Colour varies with age, population and breeding season, so not every adult is uniformly green.

It spends most of the day on branches, basking and feeding. Adults are chiefly herbivorous, eating leaves, flowers and fruit. Strong claws help grip trees. In danger it may escape into water, swimming capably with tail movements.

Interactions involve head movements and dewlap displays. Dominant males use these signals in territorial defence and courtship. Females descend to dig an egg-laying site. Young live independently from the start and initially use lower vegetation more often.
