Greek tortoise — size comparison — facts and sources

The Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca) inhabits dry areas of North Africa, western Asia and southeastern Europe. Distinctive spur-like projections occur on its thighs.

It crops low plants when feeding, taking shelter in scrub and hollows when conditions are less favourable. Shell structure and colour vary between populations.

It eats leaves, grasses and flowers. The female buries eggs in the ground. Despite similar names in some languages, this species should not be confused with Hermann’s tortoise, Testudo hermanni.
