The southern greater glider (Petauroides volans) is an Australian marsupial closely associated with eucalypt canopies. It inhabits mature forests where trees provide both food and hollows.
It feeds mainly on eucalypt leaves. This food is low in energy and difficult to use, so selecting suitable leaves matters for daily feeding. It is active at night and spends the day in a sheltered hollow.
A membrane stretched between its limbs allows gliding between trees, reducing the need to descend to the ground. Canopy continuity and the presence of old trees are important habitat features.
