The greater fairy armadillo is a small armadillo adapted for digging. It has small eyes and ears, pale hair beneath the body and very strong front claws. It inhabits sandy soils in the Gran Chaco region of Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina.
It spends most of its life underground, so it is rarely observed and its biology remains poorly known. Broad front feet and enlarged claws help it push loose soil aside quickly. It is a separate species from the pink fairy armadillo Chlamyphorus truncatus. In Calyptophractus retusus the armour is more firmly attached to the body, and the tail lacks that species' shovel-shaped tip.
