Great hammerhead — size comparison — facts and sources

The great hammerhead has a broad, hammer-shaped head and a very tall dorsal fin. It inhabits warm shelf waters, reefs and oceanic islands. Usually solitary, it migrates seasonally between different parts of this environment.

It hunts rays, bony fish, cephalopods and smaller sharks. Electroreceptors beneath the broad head detect weak electrical fields produced by prey. When searching for animals hidden in sediment, they supplement information from vision and smell.
