The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) inhabits European ponds and surrounding terrestrial habitats, including vegetated ponds, nearby meadows and scrub.
An orange, dark-spotted belly contrasts with the brown back in both sexes. During breeding males develop a tall crest and display tail movements. On land the newt uses damp shelters.
It eats invertebrates and small aquatic animals. Females place eggs individually on aquatic plants. Suitable ponds and surrounding terrestrial habitats are both necessary for its life cycle.
