Gray’s beaked whale — size comparison — facts and sources

Gray’s beaked whale occurs in temperate Southern Hemisphere oceans, with many known specimens from New Zealand coasts. A long, pale beak helps distinguish it, although offshore identification can be difficult.

Unlike most genus members, it also has a row of small upper-jaw teeth. Mass strandings occur. Its diet includes deep-water prey; knowledge of living groups and reproduction is considerably more limited than that of examined specimens’ anatomy.
